Opportunities for People With AIDS (HOPWA)
NSCAP’s
HIV/AIDS housing services are designed to utilize the resources
available to those who are low-income and suffering from HIV
and AIDS. The housing needs of those who are HIV positive
are often very different than those who are not positive.
Housing Specialists take care to consider each individual’s
needs when consulting with a client.
When
working with the client, the Housing Specialist will:
• Assess the current housing situation and service
needs of the individual or family
• Present available options to meet both immediate
and long-term needs, including homelessness prevention
• Screen to determine the family’s eligibility
for subsidized housing, and assistance in completing applications
• Help mediate resolvable CORI or credit problems
• Provide landlord/tenant mediation to help maintain
housing
• Assist client with evictions, housing appeals and
other housing related legal matters
• Refer to NSCAP’s Housing Attorney for free
advice and possible representation in court
• Assist client with obtaining connections to local
services to treat HIV related issues as well as other appropriate
needs
• Access rental start up funds
• Follow-up and provide stabilization services for
up to one year after placement
Housing Case Managers can assist clients after they are housed
through furniture referrals, tenant/landlord mediation, budgeting,
etc. Clients who are housed are encouraged to access their
Housing Case Manager for further assistance when needed.
